“Refractions” is an ongoing recording project by East Coast-based clarinetist/composer Gleb Kanasevich, made to showcase existing masterworks for solo clarinet and promote and foster new creations for up-and-coming young talents. The second installment of the series focuses on music for clarinet and various electronic forces. The electronics used were pre-recorded tape, amplification, live/interactive electronics and processing, as well as max/msp and additional acoustic resonance modifications (piano resonance, percussion instrument resonance and more). This time, Gleb Kanasevich has teamed up with established names like Ken Ueno and Nathan Davis of ICE, as well as promising emerging talents in the American new music community like Fay Wang and Brendon Randall-Myers. While stylistically the album is extremely diverse, it gives a fantastic crash course of the general state and atmosphere of the American composition melting pot today, using Steve Reich’s masterpiece “New York Counterpoint” as a departure point.
